It’s with a little trepidation that I undertake the task of writing this comp wrap. Kimmy Mac has done such an awesome job of bringing her enthusiasm and stoke to the pages of the BGSR blog and Facebook page and she has really set the bar high! I hope I can fill her gigantic shoes!
I saw so many new faces down on the beach last Saturday, some were competing for the first time, others were checking out what it was all about, and still some more were salty old sea hags coming out of the wood work… To all the girls who competed for the very first time- WELL DONE! It’s daunting but you’ve taken the hardest step and your surfing will improve exponentially from here if you keep coming to comps and surfing through winter.
Now on to the surfing! The conditions weren’t great, but at least the sun was shinning and it wasn’t raining cats and dogs for a change! Many of us would have preferred some slightly bigger waves, however the longboarders and beginners had their work cut out for them!
The day started with the Juniors heading out and surfing their heat as a final. The little gigets battled it out and caught some beauties! In the end though, the final placings were Camille 1st, Bella 2nd, Ruby 3rd & Eliza 4th. Camille, as always, was a gracious victor and was still frothing about how much fun she had the next day when I saw her out at Bondi!
Next up was the Longboard final. New member Peta showed she is a force to be reckoned with and Brenda demonstrated again how stylish and graceful she is on a longboard, putting her best foot forward. Final places were Brenda 1st, Peta 2nd, Olivia 3rd, Lisa 4th and little old me, Sofia 5th. This division continues to grow and become more and more competitive each comp, lets see how many entries we can get for May!
The Beginners final saw Michelle take out her first ever comp! We’re expecting more big results from you this year Michelle! In second place was Beth followed by Maria in 3rd. Beginners is all about getting experience, gaining confidence and having fun! It’s always great to see the beginners ladies progressing over the season and the monthly comp is a great way to measure your own progress.
The Int A division was very competitive last season and Saturday was no exception. Sadly a few sirens from this division were out of the water with injuries (we wish you all speedy recoveries!). Lucy, who was nipping at Kimmy Mac’s heels all last year took out the Int A division this month. Lucy in 1st was followed by Tania 2nd, Nell 3rd, Peta 4th, Emma 5th and Amanda 6th.
With quite a few girls coming up in to Int B from Beginners this year, this division fielded a bumper number of competitors and two finalists (Sarah Shanno and myself) were surfing in this division for the first time! In the end though, it was the more experienced competitors who triumphed, with Bec 1st, Anne 2nd, Sarah 3rd and Sofia 4th.
The Advanced ladies did battle with a nutty wave hog dropping in left right and centre, a crowded line up and lacklustre waves, but did it with style and grace. Ripping new member Tracey finished up in 1st, followed by Milo 2nd, Brenda 3rd and Anna 4th.
A few house keeping notes from Saturday:
When you paddle out before your heat- please DO NOT catch waves until the hooter has sounded for the beginning of your heat. We have seen too much interference in heats and awesome waves not counting as a result of this, so please remember for the next comp!
Drop in rule- The surfer who takes off closest to the breaking wave has right of way on that wave. Dropping in will lose you points and friends!
There are competition rules and a guide to competition grades and scoring up in the ‘Competition‘ section- please take the time to read them and become familiar with them
Next comp is May 5th (only 2 weeks away eeeeek!) so get you’re wetty out, wax ya board and get in the water!

I loved your first comp wrap Sofia. Congratulations, you are perfect for the job and i look forward to next month’s Blog. Feeling guilty i didn’t have photos for you, life happens sometimes. I dropped my camera in the sand and lost everything. Cheers Kim
Thanks for a great wrap, Sofia.
Hey Kim, was that you mentioned on p. 68 of today’s Australian Financial Review in relation to Lara Bingle? Hope she gets in the water so she can get a taste of the real Bondi, which is multiple surfers dropping in on 2 foot waves! Cheers, Karin
