October Comp Wrap Up

16 Oct

You could be forgiven for thinking that we haven’t had a comp for over 3 months as we have jumped from the June comp wrap up straight to the October comp wrap up! However, this simply reflects how busy our lonely little blogger has been! My humblest apologies go out to all the corners of the world wide interwebs 😉

We welcomed a new sponsor to the BGSR fold this month! Surfkini Australia generously donated prizes for the winner of each division this month. Owner Alana said she was honoured to sponsor this comp and that Surfkini is all about supporting chicks who surf and just get out into the water. Surfkini, we are all about supporting chicks who surf and just get out in the water too! So this is a match made in HEAVEN!

ImageOn Saturday the sun was shining and the waves were PUMPING! A special welcome gos to our new junior member Poppy. We are always so thrilled when young girls who rip join our club! Good on Poppy’s dad for being the cheer squad 😉

ImageSaturday was also the 11th anniversary of the Bali Bombings and we held this comp in memory of Chloe Byron who passed away at age 15 in Bali.  Chloe was one of our original Wahine’s and lives forever in our hearts. A true blue Bondi Surfer girl, Chloe loved surfing, was always smiling, giving everything a go, cheering others on and living the Aloha spirit. As a tribute to her beautiful soul and in support of Chloe’s family we took a break mid comp, to paddle out together and form a circle of honour out the back. One minute of silence and reflection followed and finished with us tossing flowers in the air and giving 3 cheers for Chloe. Members of the greater Bondi surfing community and the Bondi Rescue Lifeguards joined us in quite intimidating surf conditions, and everyone had a go, in honour of Chloe, who always did!! ….. and with a smile. And didn’t she deliver a wonderful lull to get us all out the back!! The stuff of legend! Long time member Kimmy Mac said “I am so proud of all the BGSR girls, this was such an uplifting morning and I can’t wait until the November comp.” Karin said “thanks for organising the paddle out, it was very moving, important to remember Chloe and those who died in Bali and to keep supporting the families. Massive surf was a challenge, so thank you to everyone who helped get the group out the back and return to the beach safely.” Chloe will always be remembered in Bondi, and her spirit of aloha will continue to live on the first Saturday of every month when the Bondi Girls Surf Riders take to the waves. Mahalo!

The heats recommenced after the paddle out, and boy did the battle begin!? Points that could decide overall winners for the year were on the line and the girls really showed it. Someone commented in our Facebook group about two barrels and an air being landed?! I’m not sure if this someone is having me on… but let’s just say that it happened 😉 hehe. Regardless of fantasy maneuvers, the final results were a roll call of familiar names, and these people can be sure that they have done their very best in the end of year points tally. With only one comp left for the year, some division winners have already been decided!

Adult Beginner: Natasha Serventy

Junior: Camille Chupin

Longboard: Brenda Miley

Intermediate B: Michelle Granger

Intermediate A: Kelly Hatch

Advanced: Kelly B (sorry, I still don’t know your surname Kelly?!)

Well done to everyone who competed and thank you to everyone else who came along to support us and join in our memorial paddle out.

There was an amazing spirit on Saturday and I think Maggie summed it up the best, saying “this comp felt special, BGSR is the best club I’ve ever joined, so keep on rocking!”
